I stayed at Onion River Campground in Marshfield, Vermont, from May through October of 2021 and felt right at home there. The photos below were taken at the Montpelier park &#38;amp; ride on November 1, moments before I set off on the first leg of my trip.

November 1–3, 2021
I spent the first two nights of my trip parked in the driveway of a friend of a friend in Lenox, Massachusetts. The nights were chilly, but the Harwood family was welcoming and generous to a stranger and her dogs, and the dogs and I got to take a lovely walk in nearby John Drummond Kennedy Park. I knew I wanted to take the western route through Massachusetts, since I’ve done the eastern route so many times already, but beyond that I had no answer for my host when he asked, “What brought you through Lenox?” Essentially, why not?
On the way south, I also stopped in Williamstown to have coffee and stroll about town with my friend Chris, a fellow graduate from VCFA’s MFA in Graphic Design.

November 3–5, 2021

My first few days in New Jersey were spent at my friend Kali’s family’s lake house in the northwestern part of the state. Take everything you think about New Jersey and flip it upside down, and you have Lake Arcadia. The dogs were able to roam freely, and I realized that I might not find another spot so peaceful and refreshing on my entire journey.&#38;nbsp;

I also spent a couple days in the southeastern part of New Jersey, right on that good old Jersey shore. I was there to visit my beloved, 91-year-old grandmother, and I also found time to visit Lucy, the famous elephant of Margate City. When I was three or four years old, I was at my great-grandfather’s house in Margate and decided to run away to my “friend” Lucy. I’m not sure how long I was gone, but I can’t blame my younger self for wanting to hang with Lu. (Note: Lucy was clad in scaffolding and under renovation when I visited, but I just chose to think of it as her winter coat. The girl’s got style.)

November 7–10, 2021
I took the ferry from Cape May–Lewes ferry from New Jersey to Delaware after learning that campers are allowed on board. The $42 fare for an extra-long vehicle was only slightly more expensive than the tolls I would have paid between New Jersey and Maryland. (No joke, sadly.)&#38;nbsp; The dogs did remarkably well on the ferry, and I had a lovely time drinking a Paloma on the highest deck.&#38;nbsp;
The campground between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach was bare bones, but the proximity to the ocean made it okay. The dogs and I got our exercise walking miles and miles along the nearly empty beaches at Cape Henlopen State Park, and I conquered my fear of heights (or, more accurately, just put it on hold temporarily) to climb the WWII-era tower and gaze out at the wind-whipped top.

I spend one night camped in front of my aunt Lauren’s house in suburban Maryland, sleeping on an unfortunate tilt because of the way the street slanted toward the gutter. Despite waking up a little woozy because all the blood had rushed to my head, the quick visit was great fun. We, along with my cousins and their partners, beat an escape room with 11 minutes to spare and then had a yummy outdoor dinner with fancy heaters, and Lauren and I took my mutts and her whippets to the dog park the next day. My sister may be the one named after our aunt, but Aunt Lauren and I are kindred spirits.

I next drove to Shepherdstown, on the far eastern tip of the West Virginia panhandle, to see my dear friend Abby. I met Abby just about half my life ago, when we both worked at the Sputnik Cafe in Crownsville, MD. We don’t see each other often, but, no matter how long it’s been, spending time with Abby makes me feel right at home. We got treats at the local bookstore, took my dogs on a long walk on the C&#38;amp;O Canal towpath, and talked deeply about grief and loss.&#38;nbsp;
On my first night in town, Abby drove us back into Maryland to visit Maria and Bill, two former owners of the Sputnik and good friends. They treated us to scrumptious dinner and drinks, good conversation, and Basset Hound kisses in their self-designed house filled with Maria’s art and the fabulous chandelier that gave the Sputnik its name.&#38;nbsp;

I nearly blew out my clutch trying to back my trailer into the tiny space my aunt Janice had recommended next to her garage, but eventually I persevered...by finding an alternate spot in the driveway. Once I was settled in, Janice and I took a walk on some trails near the house and then settled in for an evening of coffee, wine, and chatting. The next day, we went to Arlington to visit my cousin Darren and his wife Nina, and to see my other cousins Marielle and Julianne who were visiting, along with two of Julianne’s friends. Thank heavens for the vaccine making that gathering possible!&#38;nbsp;
I came back to Oakton for Thanksgiving with much of my mom’s side of the family, including sweet, silly Grandmom. The holiday was a great time, and I got to be present while my cousin Julianne’s boyfriend, Cory, proposed to her in front of the whole family right before Thanksgiving dinner. She said yes!&#38;nbsp;

I fell in love with Powhatan State Park the moment I pulled into the campground, even though it was fully dark by the time I arrived. This park, opened on July 6, 2012, comprises 1,554 acres of forest and farmland on the banks of the James River and is quiet, serene, and beautiful. I’ve never been to such a young state park before, and its youth shows in the freshly paved roads, ADA-accommodating campsites, and thoughtful signage and typography. I stayed in site 08 Monday night through Friday morning then moved to site 14 to extend our stay another day. The dogs and I walked just about all the trails in the park, spending an hour out on Tuesday, three hours on Wednesday, and two hours on Thursday, and we gloried in the mid-70s weather on Thursday. I wish I could live at this park!&#38;nbsp;
A thing I’m learning: Stay at campgrounds during the middle of the week, when the weekenders are home at work and school. So nice and empty!
We also took a drive out to Shenandoah National Park, strolling about and doing a portion of the famed Skyline Drive. Almost as impressive as the views on the drive were the town names in central Virginia, my top picks being Goochland and Bumpass.&#38;nbsp;
