My stay in Why marked the second time I got to sleep in the pop-up bed on top of the van. It was just too chilly everywhere else! I stayed at Sonoran Skies Campground, which is run by a delightful Scottish expat named Joyce who has about 50 chickens, a turkey, a shep-a-doodle puppy named Jojo, and a truly adorably little campground. She greeted me with fresh citrus from her trees upon arrival, and there was a campfire for guests to gather around every single night of my stay.
The campground is just a few miles away from Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, and the dogs and I had a great time exploring the trails and the Ajo Mountain Loop drive, marveling at the saguaros, chainfruit chollas, palo verdes, and of course the organ pipe cacti that give the park its name. The various ways plants evolve in and adapt to a desert environment are marvelous in the truest sense of the word.
