I next drove to Shepherdstown, on the far eastern tip of the West Virginia panhandle, to see my dear friend Abby. I met Abby just about half my life ago, when we both worked at the Sputnik Cafe in Crownsville, MD. We don’t see each other often, but, no matter how long it’s been, spending time with Abby makes me feel right at home. We got treats at the local bookstore, took my dogs on a long walk on the C&O Canal towpath, and talked deeply about grief and loss.
On my first night in town, Abby drove us back into Maryland to visit Maria and Bill, two former owners of the Sputnik and good friends. They treated us to scrumptious dinner and drinks, good conversation, and Basset Hound kisses in their self-designed house filled with Maria’s art and the fabulous chandelier that gave the Sputnik its name.
