The last stop during my sister’s time with me was Louisville, Kentucky (though our Hipcamp was just over the Ohio River in Sellersburg, Indiana). I had bought us tickets for an afternoon of horse races at Churchill Downs, and I was so excited to finally see a race in person—I wanted to be a jockey when I was a horse-crazy kid, back before I grew too large. Heartbreakingly, we forgot to figure in the inexplicable change from Center to Eastern Time that happens when you travel straight north from southern Kentucky to northern, and we missed the whole thing. I was nearly inconsolable, but we made the best of it by getting dinner at the Silver Dollar and admiring the decorated sidewalks and other charms of the Clifton neighborhood.
The next day, before I dropped Lauren off at the airport, we got tasty brunch at Big Bad Breakfast and took the boys to another dog park. I was struggling with the heat and humidity (I used to love that kind of weather, but I’ve turned into someone who prefers a nice 70º day), but my Floridian sister just basked in the soup.
For the rest of my time in town, I visited Cherokee Park (designed by Frederick Law Olmsted), got a bottle of fancy small-batch at Justins’ House of B0urbon,* and strolled the dogs in Waterfront Park. I wanted to visit the Kentucky Derby Museum and visit more spots along the Bourbon Trail, but, as in OKC, it was too hot to leave the dogs in the van, so I did the responsible thing and took a pass.
* That is not a typo—it really is Justin-apostrophe-S, oddly.
