Savannah, Georgia

December 8–11, 2021

You don’t need me to tell you Savannah is beautiful. But I’m gonna do it anyway: Savannah is beautiful. My campsite at Skidaway Island State Park was enormous, level, and private, covered in live oaks draped in spanish moss, saw palmettos, and other plants. Deer wandered through the campground and grazed just off the trails. And squirrels are everywhere. My dogs might have a nervous breakdown soon, but I’m in bliss.

We wandered around Bonaventure Cemetery and saw Johnny Mercer’s grave and many other ornate monuments. I’ll probably donate my body to a “body farm” science facility when I go, but if I were to be buried it seems like giving my loved ones a reason to visit such a gorgeous spot wouldn’t be bad. Walking around the city itself was lovely, too. The dogs and I explored parks and squares and gaped at the ostentatious old homes in the historic district. I got a scrumptious coquito latte at PERC Coffee, sat outside in the sun at The Wyld dock bar with gin cocktails and a good book, and had outstanding food, drink, and service at The Grey. The Trotter Toast (a vegetarian’s nightmare and oh so delicious) and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Winter Gimlet cocktails were out-of-control good, and the bartenders working the turntable didn’t know how to pick a bad song. If you get a chance to go to The Grey, go to The Grey.

On the way out of town, I took the boys on a hike around the trails at the state park, shopped at The Paris Market, and got a delicious guava pastry at Back in the Day Bakery. Florida is next up on the agenda of states, but damn, am I going to miss Georgia.

About Me

I’m a graphic designer, musician, and editor whose job went remote in March 2020. In mid-2021, I sold my house, bought a camper, and decided to hit the road with my two dogs. My homebase is Vermont, and I’ll return eventually, but for now I’m going mobile.
About My Camper

For the first few months of my trip, I was driving Pierogi, a 2014 Toyota Tacoma, and pulling Donna, a 2021 Sun-Lite Classic 16BH camper. Partway through the trip, though, I realized I love this life and wanted to up my game, so I traded in my sweet little setup for a 2022 Thor Sequence camper van, Vincent Van Go(gh). Less in the way of vintage charm, but he rides sooooo fine.
