Things I have learned: 1) don’t hike a dunefield in 30 mph winds, 2) don’t do that in shorts and a tank top, 3) don’t do that barefoot, since your toe skin will rip in surprising and horrifying ways, and 4) don’t bring your poor dogs along for the ride.

Great Sand Dunes National Park was very cool, but I happened to visit during a time of persistent high winds, and sand + wind = a very intense experience. We stayed in the Piñon Flats Campground in the park, and I was able to take the boys for a nice sunset walk into the dunes after we got settled, but our attempt at a more substantial dune hike the next day ended in blood, sweat, and near tears. Like a good nerd, I distracted myself from the discomfort by channeling Paul Atreides and Jessica from Dune and watching out for sandworms.

About Me

I’m a graphic designer, musician, and editor whose job went remote in March 2020. In mid-2021, I sold my house, bought a camper, and decided to hit the road with my two dogs. My homebase is Vermont, and I’ll return eventually, but for now I’m going mobile.
About My Camper

For the first few months of my trip, I was driving Pierogi, a 2014 Toyota Tacoma, and pulling Donna, a 2021 Sun-Lite Classic 16BH camper. Partway through the trip, though, I realized I love this life and wanted to up my game, so I traded in my sweet little setup for a 2022 Thor Sequence camper van, Vincent Van Go(gh). Less in the way of vintage charm, but he rides sooooo fine.
