I thought spent a weekend in Kerrville to visit with my friend Owen Cassidy, but it might be more appropriate to say that I drove all that way just so our dogs could play. Freyja and Mochi were fully obsessed with each other and barely stopped wrestling the entire time I was in town.
As for human activities, we drove down to San Antonio on Saturday. We got to walk through the Alamo (smaller than you’d think, but still very cool), I bought an embroidered shirt from Mexico in the Mercado, we ate freshly fried churros, and then we got late lunch from a Mexican restaurant that I can’t remember the name of (and even if I did, I might need to go into witness protection for giving up the identity of Owen’s killer hole-in-the-wall dining spots). That night, we had a Zoom hangout with our friend Laura, way up in New Hampshire.
On Sunday, we hiked up Enchanted Rock and saw incredibly 360º views of the Hill Country. On the way there, we poked around kitschy little Luckenbach, and then I almost killed both of us by buying Sour Pickle Balls from the Tex-Mex candy section of a convenience store. They were too salty, too sour, kind of spicy, and kind of sweet all at the same time, and thoroughly disgusting. Avoid at all costs! For a much better culinary experience, we went up to Llano for some barbecue from Cooper’s, which we ate ate at a picnic table in a nearby park while I drank a Lone Star (surprisingly tasty), and we watched a dad take his small daughters for a wild ride on their four-wheeler. As it got dark, we headed back down to Fredericksburg for some music at Crossroads Saloon & Steakhouse. The band, Bakersfield TX, was great fun and featured a cowboy-hatted woman behind the drumset and a pedal steel off to the side.
Owen was the best of hosts, and Texas is great!
