I tried to visit Mesa Verde National Park, but sadly it was a bit of a bust. The haze from a combination of smoke from wildfires and sand/dust blowing about in the high winds made visibility pretty poor, and the Spruce Tree House was closed due to the high risk of rock falls. The best I could do was get a far-off view of the incredible cliff dwellings built about 800 years ago. I also got to see the fire-lookout station built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. (Not quite as historic as the Pueblo villages, but still pretty cool.)
It was Mother’s Day, which is always a rough one for me, so I decided to splurge on a dog-friendly hotel room and spend my first night outside the van since mid-January. The hot shower, king-size bed, trashy true-crime television shows, free wifi, and delivery pizza convinced me that I made the right move. And, as you can see, the boys loved the big bed.
